This odd insect-like creature resembles a large beetle with no eyes, two large antennas, four legs and two claws with wicked barbs on the end. It crawls over the ground and walls quickly, clicking the large mandibles on its mouth as it rushes towards you.

Cave crawlers are large insects that inhabit the lower reaches of caves and the Underdark. They feed on anything they can catch, using their vile acidic blood to melt most enemies before devouring them.

Cave crawlers are very fast and can crawl on the ceiling and walls of caverns as fast as a human can walk. They prefer to catch prey and then drag them back to their dens to dine. They care nothing for valuables, preferring only to feed.

Cave crawlers are approximately 9 feet long and about 3 feet wide. They have hard exoskeletons that are covered with lichen and usually are a dull gray or light black color. Cave crawlers do not speak, but they can communicate with each other with clicking sounds.,Cave crawlers are large insects that inhabit the lower reaches of caves and the Underdark. Combat
Cave crawlers prefer to hide on cavern ceilings or walls and then ambush their prey in a surprise jump attack. They pick one victim and attack it repeatedly until it drops, they then try to take the victim back to their lair and feed without having to fight anything else.

Acid Blood (Ex): The cave crawler's blood is completely acidic to all creatures except another cave crawler. Anytime a creature deals slashing or piercing damage to the cave crawler, it must make a Reflex save (DC 17) or take 1d4 points of acid damage from it spraying from the open wound. Anyone attacking the creature with a bludgeoning weapon does not suffer this effect. This save is Constitution based.

Acid Spit (Ex): Once ever 1d4 rounds, the cave crawler can hurl a ball of acid produced in its mouth. This is treated as a range touch attack (+7 ranged attack bonus) with a range of 30 feet and no range increments that deals 3d4 points of acid damage.

Improved Grab (Ex): If a cave crawler hits with it's bite attack, it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple (grapple bonus +16) as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. It continues to deal bite damage and acid damage each round it maintains the grapple.

Susceptible to sonic attacks: The cave crawler relies mainly on sound vibrations in the caverns that it senses with its antennae to notice prey. If a cave crawler is in the area of a Silence spell, it becomes effectively blind, losing its tremorsense and blindsight abilities. It takes double damage from any sound based attack unless a save is allowed for partial or no damage.

Skills: In underground environments, the cave crawler receives a +10 racial bonus to its hide check.

Society
Cave crawlers live for about 25 years. They choose one mate for life and lay eggs every year. Cave crawlers are only found alone or in mated pairs. They are fiercely territorial and very dangerous when hungry.
