Mezznoroth are hideous demons who feed on any creature smaller than themselves. They are experienced planewalkers who have overrun entire worlds in aeons gone by. Mezznoroth prefer intelligent prey; the taste of terror is addictive to them.

A mezznoroth has a long, snaking body covered in fine scales. Toward the head are two prehensible tentacles that are used as arms and hands. The head has a pair of large, emerald green eyes and a gaping maw. Rarely seen, its torso unfolds into a writhing mass of tendrils, the true means by whih it devours its prey. Normally, the mezznoroth exhibits great curiosity, intelligence, sel-control, and sometimes even compassion. But when it becomes hungry (about once a week) it descends into a terrible feeding frenzy. Most mezznoroths lurk in the dark places of humanoid cities, preying on the night-time wanderers.Others may be found in the service of more powerful fiends, or may have set up petty kingdoms of their own, lording it over the fearful peasants.

Combat
The mezznoroth usually catches its prey by posing as a beautiful member of the opposite sex. When it has the prey in an isolated location, it reveals its true form and swallows its victim whole. Against serious foes, the mezznoroth will attempt to cause a distraction with its magic and then planeshift. If it can't planeshift, then it will flee, change form, and play innocent if the pursuers find it again. Against lone opponents, it will usually paralyse or capture the foe, then proceed to swallow them. Mezznoroths can use weapons as if they were warriors, but don't see the point unless they have powerful magic artifacts at their disposal.

Spells (Sp) All mezznoroths have the abilities of 4th level sorceror, and are usually well versed in combat magic.
Swallow Whole (Ex) A mezznoroth who makes a critical attack roll while unarmed is assumed to have unfolded his torso cavity and swallowed his unlucky victim. The cavity is large enough to contain one medium creature or two small creatures. The mezznoroth is smart enough to realise that swallowing foes in spiked armour or carrying piercing/slashing weapons is extremely dangerous. It takes 40hp of piercing or slashing damage to escape the mezznoroth's gullet, likely killing the demon as well. 2d6 +2 acid damage is done each round by the creatures digestive fluids. After the about 24 hours the yellowed skeleton is vomited forth.
Alternate Form (Su) As a full round action, the mezznoroth can change into the form of any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature it has ever seen (but not specific individuals). All his statistics remain the same, but he loses his swallow attack until he returns to his true form.
Plane Shift (Su) Twice per day the mezznoroth can planeshift. This is usually reserved for instances of dire need, or when the beast has outstayed his welcome.

Society
Even when fed and content, most mezznoroths are selfish monsters who crave knowlegde, power, and pleasure. Few are ever completely trustworthy or sincere. Most are loners who like to operate away from even other mezznoroths. In their home in the Abyss, the mezznoroths are low on the pecking order, and often scatter across the Prime Material to find sustenance and dreams of dominion. On the Prime Material, they are seen as being some sort of vampiric demon, and are vigorously hunted.
