The Rift Mind Flayers are thusly named for the fact that they do not actually inhabit the Underdark, but rather they live on the surface along the rim of the Great Rift.

Rift Mind Flayers live in small colonies around the rim of the Great Rift. They are not quite as powerful as their Underdark brethren, but they are much more tolerant toward surface dwellers. In fact, many bold merchants prefer the Surface Illithid, as they are sometimes called, to the Drow, due mainly to their more honest disposition.

Rift Mind Flayers have an innate sense of the value of the items they posses, a skill usually associated with Dragons. Along with their inate psionic abilities, they are impossible to cheat in business deals, which they often participate in, and doing so is not reccomended.

The Rift Mind Flayers harbour a great dislike and distrust to the Drow, and thusly their primary food source consists of the brains of captured Drow patrols.

Combat
Though not as quick to jump into battle as other Illithids, the Rift Mind Flayers are still formidable foes, using the classic psionic blast/devour brain technique employed by all Mind Flayers, in other words, stunning them with psionics, then eating their brains.

Beware the powerful Tentacle technique of the Rift Mind Flayer. As the the name suggests, each hit will allow the Rift Mind Flayer to get a hold on you with their tentacles . If they get all of their tentacles attached, their victim's brain is automatically extracted, killing them instantly.

Society
The Rift Mind Flayers are by far the most social, tolerant, and friendly race of Illithid, but they are still Illithid, no matter how you look at it. They live in small, well diciplined merchant colonies along the Great Rift, gaining a living trading with surface dwellers, and their Underdark brethren. While relations with their Underdark counterparts aren't perfect, they are still much better than their relations with the Drow.
